Stencilmatic

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Stencilmatic

  1. Who needs Stencilmatic?

Stencilmatic is for people who need to automate their factory and warehouse marking operations by integrating stencil cutting with SAP and other MRP software.

  2. How does Stencilmatic improve factory and warehouse marking operations?

In a manual operation, serial numbers, lot numbers, job numbers and descriptions are printed from SAP onto a piece of paper, and then read by a human who types the information into a program such as Cut Engrave to make stencils. That is OK, except it is slow and if someone makes a typo and doesn't realize it, the wrong serial number will be stenciled and they mightn't realize. The resulting rework can be expensive, or if the mistake is not picked up in the factory or warehouse, goods can be sent to the wrong place. Stencilmatic automates marking by obtaining data directly from SAP and other MRP software. It is faster than any manual process and 100% accurate, eliminating rework and errors from transcription failures.

Installation

  1. Where can I get installation instructions?

Instructions for downloading and installing Stencilmatic are on the Download page.

  2. What cable and port should I use to connect the cutter to the computer?

For BREN 5 Series cutters, use a standard centronics parallel cable connected to the port LPT1 on your computer. If you prefer to use a IEEE USB to parallel cable, install the IEEE USB to parallel cable before you install the WinLINE software by plugging the empty cable into the PC.

For BREN 6 Series cutters, use a parallel cable or a USB cable. If you aren't able to select the USB port from the list of ports during installation, select the port called FILE: and change it later.

  3. Can I change the port that the driver and cutter are using later?

Yes, you can connect the driver to any valid Windows port later, including LPT, and network ports. To configure the driver to print to a particular port, in your Windows Printers Folder, right-click on the icon for your cutter, select Properties and then click on the Ports tab. Select a port that is available for your cutter, or click Add Port.

License Activation

  1. What happens when the license is activated?

During product activation, your license key is authenticated with the Stencilmatic License Server. If the license key endorses a valid entitlement to use the software, the software is activated.

  2. Does the computer have to be connected to the internet during license activation?

If a standard http connection to the internet is available, the license is activated via http. If the computer is not connected to the internet or is behind a NAT or firewall, it may be activated manually after obtaining a manual activation code using a web browser on another computer that has access to the internet.

  3. Can I move licenses to another computer later?

Yes. To move your Stencilmatic license, first deactivate it by clicking ctrl-shift-Activate and following the instructions to obtain a license credit. You will require your original license name and license key to obtain the license credit. After you have obtained the license credit, install the software on another computer and activate it using your original Stencilmatic license name and license key.

To deactivate your WinLINE software license and obtain a license credit, in your Windows Printers Folder, right-click on the icon for your cutter and select Properties > About/Help. Hold the ctrl and shift keys down and double click the Licensed To name. Follow the prompts using your original WinLINE license details.

Configuration and Testing

  1. How do I configure the WinLINE driver to work with Stencilmatic?

After you have installed the WinLINE driver, access the driver's Setup dialog from your Windows Printers Folder by clicking Start > Settings > Printers. Right-click on the icon for your cutter and select Printing Preferences. Configure the speed to suit the requirements of the media. Stencilmatic will automatically set resolution, work area, portrait/landscape, and media handling options at the time the stencil is cut.

  2. How do I configure the cutting machine to cut the media optimally?

To achieve the highest quality stencils it is essential that your cutting machine is configured correctly. Do not attempt to cut stencils until you have been trained to:

    1. Select the right blade for the media
    2. Set the blade depth appropriately for the media
    3. Set the correct downforce for the media
    4. Position the media roll correctly on the feed apparatus
    5. Load media into the cutter
  3. I have installed and configured Stencilmatic and WinLINE. How do I test if everything is working correctly?

Make sure your cutting machine is loaded with media and ready to cut. Launch Stencilmatic and click the Activate button. Launch Windows Explorer and browse to the folder C:\Program Files\Stencilmatic\examples. Click on a sample files, such as a.stc and drag it onto the Stencilmatic window. Release the mouse button to drop the file on the Stencilmatic window. Stencilmatic should copy the file to the watch folder and process the file, cutting a stencil.

  4. Stencilmatic is installed and configured correctly. What should I do next?

Make sure your cutting machine is loaded with media and ready to cut. Launch Stencilmatic and click the Activate button. Next, activate the software process or service that will create text data for stenciling. When conforming files are placed in Stencilmatic's watch folder, Stencilmatic should process the file and cut a stencil.
